Practical Magic confirmed for sequel

There’s a little witch in all of us! Practical Magic 2 is officially in development. Here’s what we know so far…

Get those Midnight Margaritas ready because Warner Bros has confirmed that its 1998 witchy classic, Practical Magic, will return for a sequel, provisionally titled Practical Magic 2.

Take a hit on that nostalgia button and check out the original – very ’90s – trailer for Practical Magic

Directed by Griffin Dunne and adapted from the 1995 novel of the same name by Alice Hoffman, the first movie starred Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman as sisters from a small New England town who have been doomed by an ancient curse that all men who fall in love with them will die. When Sally (Bullock) unintentionally drugs Gillian’s (Kidman’s) abusive boyfriend (played by Goran Višnjić), they’re catapulted into a supernatural cover-up which may even lead to the end of the curse…

Gillian (played by Nicole Kidman) and her sister Sally (played by Sandra Bullock) get caught up in a spot of trouble after the firmer leaves her abusive boyfriend in Practical Magic.

There’s no word on what the plot of the sequel will be but  Bullock and Kidman will return for Practical Magic 2, as reported by People. “Yes I will be in it,” Kidman said. “And Sandy will be in it. And that’s that. There’s a lot more to tell which is why we go, ‘OK, this is kind of interesting now to be able to do this.'”

Also, Variety has stated that Akiva Goldsman (who wrote the original movie, as well as I,Robot, I Am Legend and more recently, episodes of Star Trek: Strange News Worlds) will write the screenplay for the new movie, with Bullock and Kidman expected to produce alongside Denise Di Novi.

Author Alice Hoffman, does have more stories in her Practical Magic book series (there are four in all, find out more about them here), including a story set after the original book named The Book Of Magic which follows three generations of the Owens women, and one long-lost brother, in a frantic attempt to save a young man’s life and use their unusual gifts to break the curse as they travel from Paris to London to the English countryside where their ancestor Maria Owens first practiced the Unnamed Art.

There’s also no confirmation at this point on when the new movie will be released, though Warner Bros Pictures on Twitter has said the movie is currently “in development” and will be “coming soon”.

Practical Magic is available to buy on DVD and Blu-ray
